Survivin is an inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) associated with the mitotic apparatus during cell division. During telophase survivin becomes localized to the midbody. Blocking survivin expression with antisense oligonucleotides in normal and cancer cells leads to multinuclear cells and apoptosis (see this issue) suggesting that survivin plays a role both in the control of apoptosis as well as cytokinesis. This month's cover is a photomicrograph of multinucleated and apoptotic Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) following transfection with antisense survivin and stained microtubles (green) and DNA (blue). Inset: photomicrograph of survivin localized to the midbody in a dividing HeLa cell following transfection with mis match oligonucleotide and stained for microfilaments (green), survivin (yellow) and DNA (blue).
